Rich Scheckenbach

Microbiologist and Molecular Biochemist

Scheckenbach received his baccalaureate degree from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with Bacteriology as his major field of study. Major course work included biochemistry, physiology, comparative and molecular genetics, virology, immunology, zoology, and medical microbiology. During his senior year, he conducted independent research under Eugene Rosenberg and Virginia Merriam on Myxococcus xanthus as a model for the molecular basis of cellular differentiation. This work was supported in part by a National Science Foundation Undergraduate Research Grant awarded to Scheckenbach. Doctoral studies in Microbiology/Biochemistry were pursued by Scheckenbach at Oregon State University, Corvallis, under Lyle R. Brown. All requisite course work was completed for the Ph.D. program with a cumulative 3.8 GPA. Supported both as a teaching assistant and as a research assistant (through a National Institutes of Health research grant), Scheckenbach studied morphological mutants of Bacillus subtilis, altered in RNA polymerase activity, as a model for transcriptional control and selective gene expression during cellular life cycle.

Scheckenbach has worked in the dietary supplement and related health fields since 1978 when he began as a consultant to, and subsequently became Technical Director and Operations Manager of, NOVA Nutritional Products, Inc., in Calabasas, California. In this capacity, he authored technical articles and promotional materials, provided sales and marketing support for sales representatives, researched and developed new products, and interfaced with outside production laboratories as well as regulatory authorities. In 1981, Scheckenbach began his own consulting firm, Nutrition Research and Resource, in Los Angeles, subsequently moving it to Eugene, Oregon. With this firm, he served more than one hundred clients worldwide, primarily in the health food/nutritional supplement industry, for whom he developed marketing programs, formulated food, beverage and dietary supplement products, and devised, researched, and authored promotional and technical literature and publication-ready articles.

In 1984, Scheckenbach accepted the position of Sales and Marketing Manager for Aster Publishing Corporation (now, Advanstar Communications, Inc.), one of his client companies in Eugene, Oregon. Working with this international publisher of trade magazines and journals serving the pharmaceutical, biotechnology, medical device and diagnostics, and scientific/analytical markets (e.g. Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmaceutical Executive, BioPharm, LC-GC, Spectroscopy), he substantially broadened Aster's market share while increasing division revenues almost tenfold during his six-year tenure. Scheckenbach was promoted to Director of Marketing Services in January 1989, a position he held until leaving the company in October, 1990.

Returning to a more focused affiliation with the health and nutrition fields, Scheckenbach renewed his commitment to full-time independent industry consulting in November, 1990. His client base has included a spectrum of dietary supplement, food and beverage, and nutritional ingredient companies worldwide. He currently is president of Breakthrough Nutrition, LLC, a technical consulting company he established in 1992. Areas of expertise include product research and development, proprietary formulation, market assessment, product promotion, FDA and FTC compliance, and nutritional biochemistry. He is an accomplished technical writer and author of scientific and marketing materials as well as a respected and well-received public speaker, having presented to audiences of more than 10,000 attendees.
